Camping is where most people first find out their phone is useless, usually an hour past the trailhead. Do I need a satellite device for a normal camping trip?
For a busy campground with cell coverage, no. Once you are out of coverage, a satellite messenger gives you two-way texting and an SOS button for a modest price, and that is what we recommend most campers carry.

A messenger for texting and SOS; a satellite phone if you need to talk, coordinate a group or call a specific person reliably. Many families carry a messenger and rent a phone for the bigger trips.
