What an IsatPhone 2 owner needs first

The IsatPhone 2 ships well equipped. The standard package on satmodo.com includes the battery, an AC charger with international adapters, a DC car charger, a micro USB cable, a wired headset, a wrist strap and a swivel belt holster. So the first accessory is not a charger. It is a second battery, and after that an external antenna if the phone is going to be used from a vehicle or a boat.

The battery is a 3180 mAh, 3.7 V Li-ion pack rated for up to 8 hours of talk and up to 100 hours of standby. Eight hours is generous for a satellite phone, but the IsatPhone 2 has an assistance button and GPS tracking that people rely on in emergencies, and an emergency is exactly when the first battery is flat. Two batteries, rotated, is the standard advice.

The handset is rated IP65 and IK04 and operates from minus 20 to plus 55 degrees Celsius. Like every satellite phone it needs a clear view of the sky, and on Inmarsat that means a view toward the satellite over the equator rather than straight up. That matters for antenna placement, which is covered below.

How to choose an IsatPhone 2 antenna kit

The three kits share the same antenna. They differ in cable length and in what is bundled.

4 metre vehicular kit for cars and pickups

The vehicular antenna kit includes the external antenna, a 4 metre antenna cable, two USB charging cables, a dual USB socket, a suction cup mount to hold the phone on the windshield and a clip adapter. It is the complete solution for a car, pickup or small van where the roof is within a few metres of the driver.

7 metre for vans, trucks and small boats

The 7 metre cable version is for a larger vehicle, a truck cab with the antenna at the back of the roof, or a small boat where the antenna sits on a rail and the phone is at the helm. Same antenna, longer run.

12 metre for vessels and buildings

The 12 metre version reaches from a mast or a rooftop to a wheelhouse or a room below. It is the longest IsatPhone 2 cable we sell for a handset used directly. For longer runs, move to a Beam dock with an active antenna and the 50 or 60 metre Beam active cable kits.

Point it the right way

Inmarsat satellites sit over the equator, so from the United States the antenna needs a clear view to the south rather than straight overhead. IsatDock Lite and IsatDock Drive: for the IsatPhone Pro only

Two older docks on this page, the IsatDock Lite and the IsatDock Drive, fit the original IsatPhone Pro and not the IsatPhone 2. The Lite adds charging, Bluetooth, a lockable insert and remove mechanism and a RAM mounting bracket. The Drive adds a built in GPS receiver for periodic position reports and alert messages by SMS or SMS to email, plus an external speaker and microphone for the vehicle.

If you still run IsatPhone Pro handsets these are the right docks, and the four bay set charger on this page is also an IsatPhone Pro charger. If you have moved to the IsatPhone 2, ignore them and choose from the Beam IsatDock 2 range above. The IsatPhone Pro is a superseded handset and we no longer list it for sale.

What to order with an IsatPhone 2

Toward the southern sky from the United States, because Inmarsat satellites sit over the equator. Straight up is not enough; the antenna needs a clear view in the direction of the satellite with no cab, rack or superstructure in the way. What is the difference between Beam IsatDock 2 Lite, Drive, Pro and Marine?

Lite is the entry level Inmarsat certified dock with charging and an antenna connection. Drive is the vehicle version, sold here with an active magnetic antenna and hands free audio. Pro adds Bluetooth, an RJ11 telephone port for a desk phone or PBX, a privacy handset, alert and tracking, and cable runs up to 600 metres. Marine is the Pro in an IP54 housing with a built in GPS receiver and a single button location message.

Do the IsatDock Lite and IsatDock Drive fit the IsatPhone 2?

No. The IsatDock Lite and IsatDock Drive listed here fit the original IsatPhone Pro only. For the IsatPhone 2, choose from the Beam IsatDock 2 Lite, Drive, Pro or Marine range.

Can a normal desk phone ring through the IsatPhone 2?

Yes, with the Beam IsatDock 2 Pro or Marine. Both have an RJ11 or POTS port that accepts a standard corded, cordless or DECT handset or a PBX extension, with normal ring, busy and dial tones, and support cable runs up to 600 metres. The Lite does not have this port.
