Cobham SAILOR Fleet One Maritime Terminal Rental

You are taking a boat further offshore than a cell signal reaches, and you need a working link for weather, email and a voice line rather than a full broadband setup. The Cobham SAILOR Fleet One is Satmodo's entry point into maritime satellite communications, built for exactly that kind of trip.

The date you choose is the day it arrives. Pick the day you want the equipment in your hands, not the day you leave. Your rental starts the day you receive it and ends the day we get it back, so leave yourself a day or two to test everything before you travel.

What you can rent

Every unit is pre-tested and activated before it leaves the warehouse, so it works the moment you switch it on. Most orders ship the same day, and you can collect in San Diego if that beats waiting on a courier.

What Fleet One is

Fleet One is the smallest and least expensive way into maritime satellite communications that Satmodo rents. It runs on the Inmarsat network, a geostationary satellite system that reaches worldwide except the extreme polar regions, so it keeps working well past the point where a phone signal from shore disappears.

The connection runs at up to 100 kbps, and it carries a single voice line alongside the data connection. That means one terminal covers a phone call and a basic data link, rather than needing two separate systems fitted on board. For a boat that only needs a way to stay in touch and get a weather picture, that single terminal is often all the maritime communications setup required.

What 100 kbps means on board

Be honest with yourself about what 100 kbps buys before you leave the dock. It is enough for a weather forecast, a position report, a short email and a voice call to a harbourmaster or someone back home.

It is not enough for video calls, and it is not a crew wifi service that everyone on board can jump onto at once. Treat Fleet One as the boat's essentials line, not as the boat's internet connection, and plan the rest of the trip's communications around that.

That trade-off is the point of an entry-level maritime terminal rather than a flaw in this one. A low-cost, single voice line, weather-and-email connection covers a real gap for a boat that has never had any satellite communications on board before.

Who it is not for

If you are picturing several crew members streaming video, browsing freely or sharing a wifi network among everyone aboard, Fleet One is not that terminal. It carries a single voice line and a slow data connection, built for weather, position and a check-in call, not for entertainment or general browsing.

If that is closer to what your trip actually needs, ask Satmodo about a higher-throughput terminal instead of trying to make Fleet One do a job it was not built for.

What comes with every Satmodo rental

Whatever terminal you end up with, some things do not change. Every device Satmodo rents, Fleet One included, is pre-tested, activated and verified before it leaves the warehouse, so the unit that reaches your boat has already been confirmed working rather than tested for the first time at sea.

Rental insurance is available as a per-day add-on on every rental, worth asking about for equipment that is going to be fitted on a moving vessel. Support runs 24/7 from US-based, certified specialists, so if something is not behaving the way you expect once you are underway, there is someone to call.

Fitted rather than carried

Unlike the BGAN terminals Satmodo rents for use on land, Fleet One is installed on the vessel rather than carried aboard in a bag. That makes a rental a different kind of arrangement than picking up a case and walking off with it.

Call (800) 279-2366 and talk through how fitting and collection work for your boat before you book, so there are no surprises on the day.

Questions people ask before they book

What speed does Fleet One actually give me?

Up to 100 kbps. That is enough for a weather forecast, a short email and a voice call, not for video or general browsing. Fleet One is the entry point into maritime satellite communications, not a broadband replacement for the boat.

Does it include a phone line?

Yes. Fleet One carries a single voice line alongside its data connection, so the same terminal handles a phone call as well as basic data, rather than needing a separate satellite phone fitted on board as well. One unit, one installation, both jobs covered.

Where does it work?

Anywhere the Inmarsat network reaches, which is worldwide except the extreme polar regions. Fleet One runs on that geostationary network, so it keeps working well past the point where a cell signal from shore disappears, right out to open ocean.

Is this fitted or do I carry it aboard?

Fitted. Unlike Satmodo's land BGAN terminals, Fleet One is installed on the vessel rather than packed into a case, which makes the logistics of a rental different from picking up a bag and walking off with it. Call (800) 279-2366 to talk through fitting and collection for your particular boat.

When does my rental period start?

The day you receive the terminal, not the day you book it. The date you pick at checkout is the delivery date, and your rental runs from the day it arrives to the day Satmodo gets it back; shipping time in either direction is not counted as rental days.
