Iridium satellite phone rental: 9555, Extreme, and GO!

You're headed somewhere the cell network never was, and you need one phone that works there and back. Iridium's satellites orbit low and cross both poles, so coverage does not thin out near the edges of the map. Two handsets, one hotspot, every one pre-tested before it leaves the warehouse.

The date you choose is the day it arrives. Pick the day you want the equipment in your hands, not the day you leave. Your rental starts the day you receive it and ends the day we get it back, so leave yourself a day or two to test everything before you travel.

What you can rent

Every unit is pre-tested and activated before it leaves the warehouse, so it works the moment you switch it on. Most orders ship the same day, and you can collect in San Diego if that beats waiting on a courier.

What Iridium is good at

Iridium runs 66 satellites in low earth orbit, and their orbits cross the poles. That is the whole point of the network: there is no square mile of the planet, ocean, desert, or ice cap, without a satellite passing overhead. If the route runs through the Arctic, the Southern Ocean, or anywhere else a cell tower has never reached, this is the network built for it.

Who it is not for

India is the line you cannot cross with this network. Iridium is not permitted there at all, only Inmarsat is, and only with a permit obtained before the trip. If India is on the itinerary, look at the Inmarsat IsatPhone 2 instead, and start the permit paperwork well before departure.

It is also the wrong shape for two jobs people try to use it for. If a whole crew needs to hear the same transmission at once, a handset makes one call at a time and a push-to-talk radio does not. And if what you actually need is a working laptop in the field, a phone will not carry it; that is a portable internet terminal.

The three Iridium rentals, side by side

All three run on the same network. What differs is what the thing in your hand actually does.

Iridium 9555

The straightforward voice handset. Four hours of talk time, thirty on standby, and nothing to learn beyond extending the antenna and dialling.

Iridium 9575 Extreme

Same network and same battery, plus a one-touch SOS button and GPS tracking, so someone at home can see where the phone is and get an alert if the button is pressed.

Iridium GO!

Not a phone. A hotspot that pairs to the phone already in your pocket and carries calls, short messages and a small set of weather and email apps. It will not open a web page.

9555 or Extreme?

Both handsets run on the same Iridium network, and both give 4 hours of talk time and 30 hours of standby, so battery life is not the decision. See the full Iridium device comparison for every field, but the short version is this: the Extreme adds a programmable one-touch SOS button, SEND compliant, plus GPS with online tracking and geo-fencing, so someone at home can see where the phone is and get an alert if the button is pressed. The 9555 has no SOS button at all.

Choose the 9555 for straightforward voice communication, a working trip where the phone is a backup line, not a lifeline. Choose the Extreme when the trip carries real risk, remote hiking, an offshore passage, expedition work, where a single button matters more than anything else in the bag. Read how to use the Extreme's SOS and tracking before departure.

What the GO! is, and is not

The Iridium GO! is a hotspot, not satellite internet. It pairs with a phone over Wi-Fi and carries voice calls, short text messages, and the data that a small set of purpose-built weather and email apps use. It will not open a web page, load a map, or refresh a feed.

Rent it to talk, to send a short message, and to pull a forecast or a compact email through the apps built for it, not to browse. Treat it like a satellite phone that happens to share its signal with a screen already in your pocket, and it will do exactly what it's built for.

Getting a signal, and keeping the battery alive

None of these devices work through a roof, a tent wall, or a canyon. Go outside to an open view of the sky, fully extend the antenna, and keep it vertical for the whole call. Once the phone registers, dial country code, then area code, then the number, and the call connects the same way anywhere on earth the phone works.

Left switched off between calls, the battery holds its charge for months, which is why two fully charged batteries and a wall charger ship in every rental. Power is rarely the problem on a trip like this; forgetting to extend the antenna is.

Questions people ask before they book

Can the Iridium GO! give me internet access?

No. It carries voice calls, short text messages, and the data used by a small set of weather and email apps built for it. It cannot load a web page, stream anything, or run a general app. If broadband at sea or in the field is what's actually needed, that's a different rental, not this one, so it's worth checking the trip's real requirement before booking.

What's the difference between the 9555 and the 9575 Extreme?

Talk time and standby are identical, 4 hours and 30 hours on both, so battery life won't decide it. The Extreme adds a programmable one-touch SOS button, SEND compliant, plus GPS with online tracking and geo-fencing. The 9555 has neither feature. Pick the Extreme when the trip carries real risk and someone at home may need to see where the phone is.

Can I use an Iridium phone in India?

No. India permits Inmarsat only, and only with a permit obtained before travel; Iridium is not allowed at all, in any form. Rent the Inmarsat IsatPhone 2 for that trip instead, and start the permit process before departure rather than at the airport, where it is too late to fix.

Can I call 911 on an Iridium satellite phone?

This depends on the network and the handset, not on simply wanting to, and it's not something to find out for the first time during an emergency. Read this guide on calling 911 from a satellite phone before the trip, so the answer is already known before it matters.

Does the rental come with a US phone number?

Yes, a US number can be added to either Iridium handset, so calls can come in the same way they would to any other cell phone. It is not available on push-to-talk rentals, which run on a talkgroup rather than a dialable number, so there's nothing to add there.

What's included in the box?

A canvas bag, two fully charged batteries, a wall charger, international adapters, and a quick cheat-sheet guide for getting a signal fast. Every unit is pre-tested and activated before it leaves the warehouse, so it's ready to use the moment it arrives, not something to configure on arrival.
