Which Starlink terminal should I buy?

Match the terminal to how the site behaves, not to the price tag. A crew that relocates buys a Mini or builds around a mobility kit; a fixed structure with mains power buys a Standard; anything exposed to weather, wash-down or vibration buys Performance or Enterprise. The guide below asks the four questions that actually decide it, and the table after it gives you the numbers Starlink itself publishes.

  • Portable and battery-run: only the Mini is built to be carried and struck each day.
  • Fixed site needing WiFi for a building: the Standard covers the most floor area and the most devices.
  • Wet, dusty or vibrating environment: Performance is rated for pressure washing and a rack-mounted power supply.
  • Permanent professional install: Enterprise pairs the Standard's own panel with earthed, IP66 power hardware.
  • Crossing a border or working at sea: the terminal choice is separate from the plan — get the region right too.

How to choose between the four terminals

Four questions sort almost every buyer into the right terminal. Answer them in the order below and the shortlist writes itself; the comparison table further down fills in the numbers.

Start with how the terminal will actually live day to day, not with a spec sheet. A dish that gets carried, mounted, struck and carried again needs a completely different build to one bolted down for five years, and the difference between models tracks that difference in build, not raw throughput. Two sites with the same headcount can need two different terminals once you account for how exposed each one is and whether it ever leaves the ground.

Wind rating is split into two rows deliberately: three models publish an operational figure, Performance publishes a survivable figure instead, and the two are not comparable.

A plan. The terminal is hardware; the connection comes from a plan on top of it. A plan is defined by two things — how far the terminal may travel, and how much priority data it gets each month. Local plans are tied to a home region and cost the least per gigabyte; global plans work across borders and at sea, subject to each territory's regulatory status. Mobility itself is included on every plan Satmodo sells, so moving the terminal is never a separate permission or an upgrade — only the region decides how far it can travel. Running past the priority allowance doesn't cut the connection off; traffic beyond it is simply served at lower priority, so it's unaffected most of the time and slower only when the local cell is busy. If several terminals need to share one allowance under one account, that's a pooled plan, and because it's priced to the fleet it starts as a conversation rather than a checkout. A mount. Mounts and pipe adapters are model-specific — a Standard adapter does not fit a Performance panel, and ordering by name rather than by model is the single most common cause of a return here. Pick the family that matches your terminal at Starlink accessories before you order anything else.

The right cable length. The run from dish to router is a fixed constraint once it's installed, and it's cheaper to measure the run twice than to re-terminate a roof cable afterwards. If you're not certain what your site needs, call (800) 279-2366 and describe the run rather than guessing at a length.

Power, if the site is off grid. The Mini draws the least of the four and is the easiest to run from DC, a battery bank or a vehicle; the larger terminals need a more sustained supply, and Performance's rack-mountable power supply is built to take a backup battery for exactly that reason. Size the power system to the terminal you've chosen, not the other way round — see powering Starlink off grid before you commit to either.

Buy a bundle when the job is already defined and matching mount, cable and case to it yourself would just mean assembling the same kit by trial and error — a mobile team standing up a site every few weeks, or a vessel where the mounting hardware has to survive a deck rather than a rooftop. The saving is in time and in not getting the fit wrong on the first attempt, not in the terminal itself.

Buy a bare terminal and pick your own mount and cable when the install is fixed, when you already know exactly what the site needs, or when the terminal is going into a permanent installation that a mobility-focused kit was never built for. Nothing in a bundle changes the terminal's own specification — it only changes what ships around it, so check the comparison table above regardless of which route you take.

Frequently asked

Yes. A terminal is hardware only; browse plans at /service-plan/starlink or read how they work at /starlink/starlink-plans. Every plan Satmodo sells includes mobility, so you never pay extra just to use the terminal on the move.
Only on a global plan. A local plan is priced against one region, and used outside it, it isn't a slow connection, it's no connection at all — the terminal simply won't get online.
Not past a point. Its WiFi covers up to 112 m² and 128 devices — roughly a third of the Standard's coverage area and about half its device ceiling — so a small crew or a single vehicle is its natural ceiling, not a full office floor.
Not reliably. Every terminal here needs a largely unobstructed view of the sky; heavy branches over the dish cause dropouts however good the plan underneath it is.
You can, if the dish gets a clear view of the sky from a roof or a high balcony, but plenty of city sites simply can't offer that, and a dish boxed in by taller buildings on every side will underperform whatever plan you put on it.
Not by default, and most business and enterprise plans here don't include one as standard. If a specific application needs a fixed address, confirm it when the plan is set up rather than assuming it's included.
Both sit in the Standard range; the specification above is for the Standard 4 we sell. If a job specifically calls for the X variant, ask before ordering, since there's no separate published sheet for it here.
Not on the same hardware. Mounts and pipe adapters are model-specific, and a Standard adapter does not fit a Performance panel, so budget for the matching adapter rather than reusing the old one.
Software-assisted manual orienting walks you through pointing the dish once it has power and a network connection. Most of the time on a first install goes into choosing a mount location with a genuinely clear sky view, not the pointing itself.

It can carry the connection, but it's also one point of failure and one coverage area. Larger crews and sites usually mean the Standard or Performance for wider coverage, plus a second terminal or a satellite phone from /buy/satellite-phones-radios as backup, rather than one dish stretched further than it's rated for.
