Where it reaches
Inmarsat is a geostationary network, which means a small number of large satellites sitting high above the equator rather than a swarm passing overhead. In practice that gives you coverage across the whole world apart from the extreme polar regions.
If your trip takes you into the high Arctic or Antarctic, rent an Iridium handset instead. Everywhere else, from mid-ocean to the middle of a desert, the IsatPhone 2 will find the satellite as long as you have a clear view of the sky.
The battery is the reason people pick it
Eight hours of talk time and 160 hours on standby is the longest battery life of any handset in our rental fleet, and it changes how you carry the phone. On a two-week trip with no reliable power, that is the difference between rationing calls and simply making them.
One habit worth adopting either way: keep the phone switched off between calls. A satellite phone battery holds its charge for months when the handset is off, and leaving it on standby all week is what flattens it.
Taking one to India
India does not permit most satellite phones, and arriving with the wrong one can mean confiscation or worse. Inmarsat is the exception, and the IsatPhone 2 is the handset to rent if India is on your itinerary.
You still need a permit, and it has to be obtained before you travel rather than on arrival. Call us on (800) 279-2366 before you book and we will talk you through what the process looks like and how long to leave for it.
How the rental works
Pick the date you want the phone in your hands. That is your delivery date, not your departure date, so give yourself a day or two to test it before you travel. Your rental starts the day you receive the phone and ends the day we get it back, and shipping time in either direction is not charged as rental days.
Every handset is activated and tested before it leaves the warehouse. When it arrives, step outside with a clear view of the sky, extend the antenna fully and keep it vertical, and place one call. If anything is wrong you want to find out while you are still standing in your driveway.
Common questions about this rental
Almost certainly. Inmarsat covers the entire world apart from the extreme polar regions, so the only trips it is wrong for are those into the high Arctic or Antarctic. For those, rent an Iridium handset instead.
Only an Inmarsat one, and only with a permit obtained before you travel. India does not permit other satellite networks at all, and bringing one without a permit risks confiscation and prosecution. Call us before you book and we will walk you through it.
Up to 8 hours of talk time and up to 160 hours on standby. Keep the handset switched off between calls and a single charge will comfortably cover a long trip.
It is rated IP65, meaning dust tight and protected against water jets, and IK04 for impact. Rain, grit and being dropped into a pack are all within what it is built for.
The handset has a dedicated assistance button linked to the GEOS emergency response service. Tell us who your emergency contact should be when you book and we will set it up before the phone ships.
It starts the day you receive the phone and ends the day we get it back. Shipping time in either direction is not charged, which is why the date you choose at checkout is your delivery date rather than your departure date.
