RedPort Optimizer and Halo: Make Metered Satellite Data Go Further

Two products with one purpose: get the most out of a slow, expensive link. The Optimizer Voice is a firewall, compressor and phone system for satellite terminals. The Halo pulls in distant marina and camp Wi-Fi so the satellite stays off.

Who RedPort routers are for

RedPort is for the sailor, expedition team or field crew whose satellite data is billed by the megabyte and whose terminal simply hands over a raw connection. Inmarsat FleetBroadband and BGAN, Iridium Certus, Thuraya IP and USB-tethered handsets such as the Iridium 9555 and 9575 all fall into this group. Plug a laptop straight into one of them and the first thing it will do is download an update you did not ask for.

RedPort is not for Starlink users, who need failover rather than rationing; that is Peplink at /buy/satellite-routers/peplink. Nor is it needed with an Iridium GO or GO exec, which have their own Wi-Fi and pass only approved apps. If your terminal gives you Ethernet or USB and your bill counts bytes, read on.

RedPort Optimizer Voice wXa-153: what it does

The Optimizer Voice sits between your satellite terminal and your devices. It takes the terminal on its Ethernet WAN or USB port, broadcasts 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for phones, tablets and laptops, and applies three controls to everything that tries to pass. A whitelist firewall: nothing gets out unless you allow it, with domain filtering and one-button whitelisting of messaging apps. Compression: RedPort's proxy cuts web data by three to five times, and RedPort Mail accelerates email up to 20 times with airtime savings of up to 85 percent. Voice: a built-in PBX turns smartphones on the Wi-Fi into handsets calling through the terminal, up to four at once on most broadband terminals, at a quoted 15 minutes of talk time per megabyte.

The hardware disappears behind a chart table: 116 by 86 by 25 mm, 180 grams, powered from 9 to 18 V DC so it runs straight off a vessel's 12 V supply. One Ethernet WAN, one Ethernet LAN, a USB port for tethered satellite phones, and NMEA GPS repeated over Wi-Fi to navigation apps. RedPort quotes 30 metres of Wi-Fi range, enough for a sailboat or small site but not a steel hull; see the Halo below or our Peplink AP One units for more reach.

One thing to know. RedPort's site states the Optimizer Voice ceased to be sold on 18 December 2020, with support to December 2023, and that its current Optimizer carries the same firewall, compression and voice functions. Ask us about stock and the current model before you order; the job has not changed.

What compression and a firewall actually save

RedPort's XGate email service is the clearest example. RedPort states that XGate uses on average 5 percent of the data of a standard email program, and that a mail run taking more than an hour over standard Iridium completes in around three minutes. Mail is fetched through RedPort's servers, stripped of formatting and attachments you did not ask for, compressed and delivered as a batch. GRIB weather files arrive the same way, small enough to download daily on an L-band plan.

The firewall saves more than the compression, because it stops traffic that should never have been sent. A phone left on the Wi-Fi overnight with the firewall off will back up photos, refresh a dozen apps and poll every account it knows. With the whitelist on, it does nothing until you open the email or weather app you approved. That is a monthly allowance lasting a month instead of a weekend, and a BGAN that can stay powered all shift without anyone worrying what the laptops are doing.

RedPort Halo Wi-Fi Extender System: use the free signal first

The Halo solves the other half of the problem: not using the satellite at all when a land signal is in reach. It is a 2.4 GHz long-range Wi-Fi receiver with a 9 dBi outdoor antenna, 28 inches tall on a standard one-inch mount, that captures a marina, harbour, truck stop or camp network from far further than a phone or laptop can. RedPort quotes up to 7 miles in optimal conditions; in practice, line of sight to the access point is what matters.

It runs on 12 V and connects to the RedPort Optimizer hotspot supplied with it over a 10 metre Ethernet cable. The Optimizer rebroadcasts the captured network around the boat or vehicle so every device shares one login, and repeats NMEA GPS, AIS and weather data to navigation software. Leave the harbour and the same hotspot takes the satellite terminal on its WAN port, firewall and compression included. One network for the crew, whichever link is behind it.

The Halo is not a cellular booster, and a network with a captive-portal login still needs that login completed once. It is for anyone who spends nights in marinas or at sites with distant Wi-Fi and wants the satellite to be the exception.

Optimizer Voice or Halo: which one?

They are complementary, not competing. The Halo package includes an Optimizer hotspot; the Optimizer Voice adds the PBX and voice functions.

What you need alongside a RedPort router

The Optimizer is only useful with a satellite link behind it and a service in front of it.

A compatible satellite terminal: Inmarsat BGAN, Fleet One, FleetBroadband or Fleet Xpress; Iridium Certus; Thuraya IP; or a USB-tethered Iridium 9555 or 9575. Terminals at /buy/satellite-internet, handsets at /buy/satellite-phones-radios.
An airtime plan for that terminal. Satmodo arranges BGAN, FleetBroadband and Certus airtime with the hardware.
A RedPort service for the compression to work: XGate or RedPort Mail for email and weather, RedPort VoIP for prepaid calling through the PBX.
A 12 V supply on the vessel or vehicle, or the included mains adapter ashore.
For a steel hull or large site, Wi-Fi reach beyond 30 m: a Peplink AP One access point fed from the Optimizer's LAN port.

Alternatives elsewhere on satmodo.com

If your link is Starlink, or you have several links that must fail over, you want a Peplink MAX router at /buy/satellite-routers/peplink; it ranks an L-band terminal as a last-resort WAN, though it is not a per-byte firewall. If you want one handheld device with Wi-Fi and its own app-based airtime control, the Iridium GO and GO exec at /buy/hotspot-devices do that for voice, messaging and specific apps, not general internet. If you need more data than L-band can give, the terminals at /buy/satellite-internet and Starlink business hardware at /buy/starlink are the step up.

Frequently asked questions

What does a RedPort Optimizer do?
It is a firewall, Wi-Fi router and compression gateway for a metered satellite terminal. Nothing passes unless you allow it, email and web traffic are compressed through RedPort's services, and the Optimizer Voice adds a PBX so smartphones can call through the terminal. The result is a predictable airtime bill and a usable email and weather routine on a slow link.
Which satellite terminals work with the Optimizer Voice?
RedPort lists Inmarsat BGAN, Fleet One, FleetBroadband and Fleet Xpress, Iridium Certus, Thuraya IP and USB-tethered Iridium 9555 and 9575 handsets for routing and data, with voice on Inmarsat, Thuraya and Iridium Certus terminals. Inmarsat has discontinued IsatPhone data, so IsatPhone users get no data benefit.
Does the Optimizer work with an Iridium GO?
It is not needed. The Iridium GO already provides its own Wi-Fi hotspot and only carries traffic from its approved apps, which is the airtime control an Optimizer provides for other terminals. RedPort's list is built around terminals that hand you a raw Ethernet or USB connection.
How much airtime does the Optimizer save?
RedPort quotes email up to 20 times faster with up to 85 percent airtime saving through RedPort Mail, XGate using about 5 percent of the data of a standard mail program, and web pages loading three to five times faster through its proxy. The firewall often saves more by stopping background traffic entirely; how much depends on what your devices were sending before.
Can I make voice calls through the Optimizer Voice?
Yes. Its PBX lets phones on its Wi-Fi call through a compatible Inmarsat, Thuraya or Iridium Certus terminal using RedPort's phone app, up to four simultaneous calls on most broadband terminals at a quoted 15 minutes of talk time per megabyte, using RedPort's prepaid VoIP service.
Is the Optimizer Voice wXa-153 still made?
RedPort's site says it ceased to be sold in December 2020 with support to December 2023, and that the current Optimizer carries the same functions. Satmodo lists stock as available; call (800) 279-2366 and we will confirm what ships and whether the current model suits you better.
What does the RedPort Halo do?
It captures a distant marina, harbour or camp Wi-Fi signal with a 9 dBi outdoor antenna, at up to 7 miles in optimal conditions according to RedPort, and the included Optimizer hotspot shares it with every device aboard. Out of range, the same hotspot carries your satellite terminal instead.
Does the Halo work with cellular networks?
Not directly; it is a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi receiver, not a cellular booster. The Optimizer hotspot it ships with accepts select GSM USB modems as a data source. For real cellular failover alongside satellite, use a Peplink router at /buy/satellite-routers/peplink.

Why RedPort is the Standard for Satellite Data Optimization

Connecting to the internet via satellite is not like using a home fiber connection. To ensure efficient communication without breaking the bank, RedPort hardware offers three critical functions:

Advanced Data Compression for Email and Weather

RedPort routers are the hardware backbone for compression services like XGate. By compressing email data and web pages by up to 95% before transmission, these devices make it possible to communicate effectively over slow connections (such as the 2.4 kbps speed of a handheld phone). This is essential for sailors and adventurers who need to download GRIB weather files or send status updates without waiting hours for a transfer to complete.

Robust Firewalling to Prevent Bill Shock

Standard computers are designed to consume data constantly. A RedPort Optimizer acts as a strict firewall, blocking all background traffic such as OS updates, cloud syncs, and social media refreshers. It only allows the specific data you request to pass through the satellite link. This "whitelist" approach is the single most effective way to prevent accidental data overages that can cost thousands of dollars.

Smartphone Integration for Voice and Text

With units like the RedPort Optimizer Voice, you can leave your satellite phone outside where it has a clear view of the sky, while you sit comfortably inside your cabin or tent. Using a simple app, your smartphone becomes the handset, allowing you to dial calls and access your contacts list seamlessly. This setup not only improves call quality by keeping the antenna stationary, but also makes the satellite experience as intuitive as using your personal cell phone.
